Ffdshow

A comprehensive codec package

What is FFDShow. What is FFDShow. FFDShow is a media decoder and encoder mainly used for the fast and high-quality decoding of video in the MPEG-4 ASP (e.g. Encoded with DivX, Xvid, or FFmpeg MPEG-4) and AVC (H.264) formats, but it supports numerous other video and audio formats as well. Sep 25, 2020 Uninstall Ffdshow in Easy Steps using an uninstaller (recommended) Total Uninstaller is the best choice for you. With Total Uninstaller, you can remove and uninstall this program completely and easily, including its registry entries and files.

While most modern media players accept a wide array of file types, using codecs can still give you a lot of power over the way you play them.

A video decoder - and much more

Ffdshow
Ffdshow is a DirectShow codec for encoding, decompressing, and tailoring most types of video and audio files.

Ffdshow is a set of video and audio codecs that allow you to play multimedia files. This software supports a variety of video formats, including MP3, DTS, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, and more - all in all, it covers all the bases.

The robust set of filters allows you to enhance your video's quality, display subtitles better, and resize the screen. When it comes to audio, it contains tools for resampling, normalization, downmixing, and upmixing.

Moreover, the full range of playback settings further tailor the activities of your player to perfection - if you can figure out how to do it by yourself since the program offers no tutorials.

Note that you don't necessarily need ffdshow, and your typical PC user won't even find it that handy. However, for people who want to explore all possibilities of their media player, this tool is excellent.

Where can you run this program?

Ffdshow runs on PCs up to Windows 8.1.

Is there a better alternative?

Yes, since ffdshow is a bit redundant for watching content nowadays. You could try GOM Player, Splash, or PotPlayer as more niche alternatives.

Our take

While this program gives you a lot of control over your playback settings, it’s becoming more obsolete for modern PCs.

Should you download it?

No, unless you want to keep using and configuring Media Player Classic, this program won’t add any value to your PC usage.

The best options for MPEG-2 are the 'LAV Video Decoder', or the 'Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder'. Unfortunately this Microsoft decoder is only availble in some versions of Windows. It was freely included in Win7 and Vista. In more recent versions of Windows, you typically need to purchase Microsoft's DVD Player app to enable MPEG2. (Alternatively, some people have reported they sucessfully enabled MPEG2 in the 'Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder' on Windows 10 following the 32bit install instructions at https://matthill.eu/tutorials/install-windows-10-dvd-player-free/)

Lots of other decoders also work well. Many of these are included with other software you may have. Some examples include, the MainConcept decoder that comes with the Hauppauge WinTV software, or the Cyberlink decoder that comes PowerDVD, the ArcSoft decoder that comes with ArcSoft applications etc.

The ffdshow decoder also works well. You can download the ffdshow decoder from http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/, making sure you enable MPEG2 during the install (since it's disabled by default)
